Manuscript Assessment

A manuscript assessment is essentially a beta read with the eyes of an editor and guaranteed feedback. It includes in-line comments in the first quarter of the novel and a short summary of overarching thoughts about the story structure, world, characters, and prose itself. I point out what I love, what is confusing, where sensory description, introspection, etc., may strengthen a scene. If I notice what I'd normally edit in a traditional line-edit (like passive voice), I will highlight with an explanation so that you can move into your own edits with a better understanding of where to start.

0-65,000 words $100 65,000-130,000 words $200 130,000+ words $300

Testimonials

FANTASTIC line edit---amazing attention to detail, preservation of voice, consistency checks, recommendations for slightly higher-level plot details, and more. Absolutely cannot say enough wonderful things about Megan!!

-Lex Easton

Megan is an amazing professional and a passionate individual. I enjoyed every aspect of the manuscript assessment she provided for me. I never felt pressured to change anything and she offered advice that allowed me to look at things from a different angle. I will be coming back for further services!

-David Vincent

Megan was outstanding! As a new author, I felt a bit lost in the whole process. Megan really helped me understand what I could expect from her end and made me feel so much better about it all. She was very communicative throughout the process and even gave me great pointers that I could take with me into my future books. Her suggestions were great, even helping me see a few things I totally missed through the countless times I read it myself. She also made me feel very comfortable if I ever decided not to follow one of her suggestions (which was almost never.) I would highly recommend her services to all authors out there, and I'll absolutely be using her for my editing needs for all my future books!

-Tam Delakor

"Megan has such an eye for detail and a way with words that has taken my book to the next level. She is efficient and professional. I highly recommend her for your line editing needs and will be using her again and again."

- Sarah C. Davies

I thought my book was in good shape before Megan got her hands on it. But she found every little mistake and every sentence that didn’t sound so great, then offered a better alternative. I agreed to every improvement she suggested. She left little cute notes that significantly improved my confidence, and finished before the date she promised. I highly recommend her services and will absolutely use them again! Thank you, Megan!

The Process

The Process

First, we will talk about any specific concerns you have with the manuscript, what you’re hoping to get from the edit, and if there’s any feedback you’ve gotten from readers that you’d like to be sure is addressed.

The formatting for the edit is fairly straightforward. I'll use track changes in either google docs or Word, depending on what you use. Then I'll leave comments in the side bar--writing craft habits popping up and how they might affect how the reader interprets the story, my own reader-type feedback (like excitement, surprise, confusion). I'll leave explanations for any suggestions I make, especially at the beginning of the doc.

Line edits will focus on in-line suggestions, with a summary of notes. Manuscript assessments will also have an editorial letter where I summarize the suggestions that might have the most impact. I'll list the strengths in the story and style, my favorite characters and plot moments, etc, and then move into Areas to Consider, with sections for Writing craft, Character Development, Plot and Structure, and Setting/Story World. At the end of both level of edits, I like to recommend relevant writing books that might address some of my observations in a longer form.

Then, in case the amount of feedback is overwhelming, I'll give two possible starting points to springboard you into any revisions you feel are a good fit. All suggestions made would be suggestions only, and once I explain any reasoning I might have, I trust you to reject whatever doesn't serve the vision you have for the story. I understand receiving feedback can be a challenging experience, but I'm in a unique position to know that this is only the beginning, and my goal will be to use neutral, supportive language to elevate both the story and you as the author.
